project

Tanzanian students’ experience of safety and inclusion in school

The project seeks to review the literature on social norms theory and use it to inform an innovative research design that adopts the Theory U process (Scharmer, 2012). The project uses digital tools to collect data. It will conduct a social network analysis which explores the prevalence and nature of violence against children. In doing so, the project aims to start answering the question of whether violent practices in school settings in Tanzania are maintained by social norms or other non-social practices.

One stage of the study will elicit children’s voices about their experience of violence. Another stage will use the same data collection tools, but deployed via SMS, to compare children and adult perspectives.
